Provect-IR Versatility Leads to Rapid Reduction of 3,000 ft Long Plume

Provect-IR Versatility Leads to Rapid Reduction of 3,000 ft Long Plume

Provectus Environmental Products, Inc. (Provectus) partnered with RMD Environmental Solutions Inc. (a Citadel EHS Company) to address contamination at a former dry cleaner site in San Rafael, California originally identified in 2007 under the Spills, Leaks, Investigation & Clean-Up (SLIC) Program. Site investigation and delineation confirmed that a chlorinated volatile organic compound (CVOC) plume had impacted the saturated zone from 15 to 25 feet below ground surface (bgs) and stretched for nearly 3,000 feet from the original source. Additional testing was completed to delineate the impacts across several properties including a major highway thoroughfare. Following a review of the site conditions, reductive dechlorination and bioaugmentation were proposed to treat the impacted areas. Provect-IR® and Dehalococcoides (e.g., DHC; KB-1®) from SiREM were determined to be the optimal remedial technologies to address the widespread plume. Provect-IR is a site-specific blend of unique reagents combined into a single product that optimizes the in situ reductive dechlorination of chlorinated VOC contamination in both soil and groundwater. This versatile technology works by promoting synergistic interactions between zero valent iron (ZVI), hydrophilic, nutrient rich organic carbon sources, chemical oxygen scavengers, vitamins, and mineral sources.

Nine month post-pilot injection sampling confirmed PCE concentration reductions of >99% in the target monitoring well. Following full-scale Provect-IR® implementation, significant PCE reductions were observed at all target monitoring wells. The 3,000 linear ft PCE plume no longer exists with reductions of >99% observed in 11 of the 14 target monitoring wells. Currently only one monitoring well within the PRB target area is above PCE standards of 5 ug/L. The Provect-IR® PRBs were designed to have a lifespan >7 years and therefore, additional CVOC reductions are anticipated as the biotic and abiotic reactions continue.
