Project Summary
An operating landfill generated approximately 26,000 lbs (or 3,050 USG) of leachate annually that contained organic contaminants, specifically trichloroethylene (TCE) and para 1,4-dichlorobenzene (1,4-DCB). Historically, the leachate was handled on-site or placed in 55-gallon drums and disposed off-site. However, changes in regulatory policies represented a significant increase in the cost of operations.
Provectus selected Provect-OX® for a combined in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) and enhanced bioremediation approach to treat the contaminated leachate on site. This cost-effective option provided the client a safe, reliable, and timely solution compared to other alternatives.
Remedial Plan
The leachate was treated with Provect-OX® at either 0.1 lb per gallon of leachate (ca. 1% weight basis) or 0.5 lb per gallon of leachate (ca. 6% weight basis). Chemical analyses were conducted on duplicate samples after 0, 3, and 5 days of reaction in sealed microcosms maintained at ~20°C.
Results
- No heat was generated during the reactions of Provect-OX® with the leachate.
- TCE was reduced to below the reporting limit of <10 µg/L in leachate within 3 to 5 days at both dosages.
- At 0.5 lb/USG, 1,4-DCB concentrations decreased ~5-fold by Day 5, from over 1,000 µg/L to less than 200 µg/L.
- Treatment at 6% (wt. basis) resulted in rapid and significant removal of all monitored contaminants without excessive solids formation.
- Estimated chemical cost of less than $0.85/USG, or approximately $500/week for on-site leachate treatment.
