Former Manufacturing Site

Pompano Beach, Florida

Project Summary

A former manufacturing factory located in Pompano Beach, FL was contaminated with chlorinated solvents following previous business operations. The primary contaminants of concern included tetrachloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (DCE), and vinyl chloride (VC). Site geology is predominately sands with shallow groundwater at approximately 5 feet below ground surface (ft bgs).

Previous attempts to remediate the site via in-situ chemical oxidation did not achieve the target cleanup levels. Concentrations of PCE in the source area remained elevated and indicative the presence of dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL).

An in-situ remedial plan was developed using antimethanogenic (inhibit methane production) emulsified zero valent iron (EZVI-CH4™) to address the residual dissolved, sorbed, and DNAPL-level chlorinated solvent contaminant mass.

Remedial Plan

ISCR application of 2,500 gallons of EZVI-CH4™ applied via 5 injection wells supplemented with Dehalococcoides (DHC) bioaugmentation. Injection depths ranged from 5 to 55 ft bgs using a specialized injection system to ensure a minimum 10 ft radius of influence across the ~1,500 sq ft source area.

Results

  • Greater than 99.99% reductions of PCE within target wells (from 159,000 and 10,300 µg/L, respectively, to below the standard of 3 µg/L).
  • DNAPL eliminated within the source area.
  • Groundwater cleanup target levels for PCE achieved within the source area despite only one injection event.
  • Strong reducing conditions persist with low DO and negative ORPs, supporting continued contaminant reductions.
