Case Study — ISCR

Shopping Mall – Georgia

Georgia, USA

Project Summary

An active shopping mall located in Georgia was impacted by chlorinated solvents following operations from the operations of a dry cleaner tenant. The primary contaminants of concern included tetrachloroethene (PCE), trichloroethene (TCE), dichloroethane (DCE) and vinyl chloride (VC).

Provect-ERD™ and ERD-CH4™ were selected for a side-by-side comparison to evaluate the methane concentrations in addition to contaminant reductions.

Remedial Plan

ISCR application to address two target areas, located approximately 200 feet cross gradient.

Results

  • MW-4 (standard ERD, no methane inhibitors) had over 30% CH₄ in headspace gas — TVA detectors exceeded their level of sensitivity and shut down.
  • MW-207s (ERD-CH4™ with antimethanogenic compounds) had only 0.5% CH₄ in headspace gas.
  • ERD-CH4™ demonstrated a ~98% reduction in methane generation compared to the standard ERD amendment.
  • Dissolved methane pre-injection at MW-207s was only 11.8 ppm compared to 13,700 ppm at MW-4.
