Recent Advancements in Remedial Technologies – Summer 2019

Quiz: Over the past year, Provectus has introduced which of the following remedial technologies to the industry:

□ Provect-“EBR®” in situ generator of reactive oxygen species (ROS) to destroy contaminants and permanently remove them from the aquifer.

□ PlumeCrud™ “Trap-and-Release” medium to transiently bind contaminants and temporarily stop plumes.

□ Provect EZVI-CH4® antimethanogenic ISCR reagent for chlorinated solvent DNAPL (cost-effective alternative to thermal treatment).

□ Provect-OX2™ buffered, extended release ISCO + sustained bioremediation amendment.

□ Scrud Remover™ for rehabilitation of wells systems fouled by organic occlusions following EVO applications.

Correct Answers:

Provect-EBR ® In Situ ISCO Generator

The EBR® (US patent 9,975,156 B2; patents pending) uniquely drives electrochemical reactions, under neutral pH and computer-controlled conditions, to continuously generate hydroxyl radicals and other Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) such as superoxide and ferrate throughout the aquifer. Direct mineralization of chlorinated solvents, MTBE, BTEX, and other compounds have been demonstrated at over 30 full-scale sites with pending applications for 1,4-dioxane and perfluorinated compounds. Secondary effects include enhanced contaminant desorption from tight lithologies and stimulated biogeochemical destruction (iron reducers). Most notably, the system allows for continuous remote monitoring and operational control making it ideal for ISCO PRB-type strategies targeting deep aquifers, fractured rock, and mixed lithologies to effectively manage large, dilute plumes often in remote areas.

Provect-EZVI CH4® Antimethanogenic ISCR Technology

Provect-EZVI CH4® (US patent 9,221,699; patents pending) is the most advanced, cost efficient formulation of the NASA-patented Emulsified Zero Valent Iron (EZVI) technology available. Provectus’ EZVI uniquely contains:

  • Controlled methanogenesis – safer, more efficient, more effective applications
  • Lower viscosity formulations – maximizes subsurface distribution and contact
  • pH stabilized formulations – optimizes emulsion stability and reactivity
  • Catalyzed ZVI – enhances reactivity by augmenting electron transfer processes

Additional benefits of our EZVI product offerings include:

Technical

  • Quality Assured For: Emulsion structure, density, hydrophobicity
  • Proven Effectiveness / Longevity
  • Custom Formulations Available

Provect-OX2® Extended Release, Buffered ISCO + Sustained Bioremediation Technology

Provect-OX2™ (US patent 9,126,245 ; patents pending ) is an In Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO) + enhanced bioremediation reagent that integrates an extended release source of potassium persulfate into the modern Provect-OX®  formula. Ferric iron (Fe III) activation is used as a safe and effective means of activating the potassium and sodium persulfates. Similar to our original Provect-OX® technology, Provect-OX2  oxidizes a wide variety of organic compounds present in impacted soil, sediment and groundwater, including chlorinated solvents, petroleum hydrocarbons, and pesticides. However, Provect-OX2 ensures extended release of oxidant throughout the treatment media. The ferric iron oxide, along with the residual sulfate, will provide enhanced bioremediation components following the chemical oxidation processes. Provect-OX2 also includes Terr-OR™ ferrate stabilizer and pH buffer to offset the sulfuric acid produced during breakdown of the persulfates. Click here for a comparative analysis.

Scrud Remover™ Well Rehabilitation Technology

Scrud Remover™ (patents pending) was developed in response to industry demand for a safe, effective means of rehabilitating wells and injection points rendered ineffective or useless by extensive fouling post high-fat EVO application (See Photograph). Where applicable, antimethanogenic reagent (AMR) technology is uniquely integrated into Scrud Remover™. While other materials to dissolve scrud will predictably follow, these will likely contain very readily biodegradable organic compounds that will rapidly ferment and liberate methane. In areas sensitive to potential plume migration, vapor intrusion, and other consequences associated with excessive methanogenesis the integrated use of AMR technology may be an important technical differentiator.
